Wake Up

Reflections

“Let everything happen to you:
Beauty and terror.
Just keep going.
No feeling is final.”

Rainer Maria Rilke

This pandemic… it is scary… and very inconvenient. We are collectively deprived of our plans and our way of life; instead of planning a trip to Spain, we are running after toilet paper. And we are terrified, annoyed and have gone a bit crazy. This thing is juicy too; there is science, there is drama, tragedy, and even fiction. I’m obsessively reading the news on twitter these days. So far it is just numbers, graphs with climbing trajectories but those numbers are about to get real on this side of the globe…

Life, it seems to me, is screaming in our face to wake up, to take nothing; our time, our loved ones, our health, and our comfort, for granted. It is screaming in our face to recognize that change is inevitable. It is asking us to expand, to make room, to shake ourselves up, to unite and be truthful. In the face of reality there is little choice. It will change us. And we need to let it.

We are distancing ourselves from each other, yet care for each other’s well-being more than ever. And we all feel so separate, how strange this distance (the isolation hasn’t even begun yet) makes us feel more connected, like we all have a hard time not to touch our face…

The world is different. We are anxious and scared. We either give in to this anxiety and lash out in one way or another, or we notice and sit with it, make space for it so that it doesn’t stick and we are free to move on when we can.

This pandemic, like every other thing, will pass. And I won’t hug but I love you. Please be well.
